Munich

The city of Munich is the capital of the county Bavaria. Its unique location near the Bavarian Alps and the numerous lakes which are situated on the outskirts of Munich make it one of the most attractive touristic destinations in Germany.

Follow us on a trip trough Munich's top spots…

Especially known for its culinary and cultural diversity, there are various places and corners in the city which should definitely be discovered during a stay in Munich.

The most famous Beer hall in Munich is the internationally known “Hofbräuhaus”. It is even part of a popular German song. A proper ‘Oktoberfest-ive’ atmosphere can be experienced throughout the whole year. One can listen to traditional Bavarian folk music, enjoy local dishes and of course, a Mass (1 litre) of locally brewed beer should be part of the visit. The beer hall was opened for the first time in 1644 and from then on it has become very popular amongst the locals and visitors of the city.

After a refreshing beer and some traditional “Schmankerl” (viands) a walk over the Viktualienmarkt will refill you batteries. The Viktualienmarkt is one of Munich`s landmarks and well known for its variety of fresh products such as fruit, vegetables and cheese.

Since 1807 it has always been the heart of the city centre with over 140 traders offering a wide range of fresh national and international specialties. The opening hours from 10:00AM – 6:00PM weekdays and 10:00AM – 04:00PM Saturday make it possible to enjoy meals and snacks at the traditional stands throughout the day.
Besides many culinary impressions Munich also offers a wide range of cultural attractions.

Near the technical University of Munich one can find the famous three museums: Alte, Neue and Moderne Pinakothek (Old, New and Modern Pinakothek). The Alte Pinakothek impresses the visitors with more than 700 masterpieces painted by Europe’s most famous painters like Rembrand or Rubens.
The Neue Pinakothek offers an interesting and impressive collection of treasures by Gauguin, Goya, van Gogh and many more.
Special tip: on Sundays the entrance fee is only 1 EUR p.p.

Munich offers a variety of beautiful churches. The most famous one is definitely  the Dom zu unserer lieben Frau ("Cathedral of Our Dear Lady") officially known as “Frauenkirche” right between the Stachus (Karlsplatz) and the Marienplatz. The Frauenkirche was established in the 12th century. The two towers are a distinctive part of Munich’s skyline.

Visitors, who want to take more than just their memories back home, should spend a day shopping in one of the charming shopping-streets where not only ‘shopaholics’ will find all types of clothes, accessories, souvenirs and more: Fraunhoferstraße, Sendlinger Straße or Leopoldstraße.

At the end of an exhausting but interesting tour through Munich, a relaxing walk through the English Garden will provide a nice and pleasant end to an eventful day. Especially in October, when the leaves on the trees are starting to take on all shades of gold the English Garden offers a unique romantic atmosphere which seems to be directly taken from a Walt Disney movie.

The most special spot to visit in the English Garden is the famous wave in the “Eisbach” where even in winter times surfers can be seen. Surfing on the Eisbach is only for very experienced surfers but it’s worth visiting and watching the surfers for tourists and locals.
